Hello Friends!

Today I am in San Antonio on the first leg of my spring mini-book tour. I was a guest on KAAB-TV the FOX affiliate in San Antonio this morning to introduce my book to viewers and will be visiting with students at Ridgeview Elementary this afternoon. If you know anyone in the San Antonio, please tell them to stop by the Barnes and Noble in the San Pedro Shopping Center off of Loop 410 and San Pedro between 6:30 and 8:30pm this evening. I’ll be doing a special reading of Katie and the Magic Umbrella”. We’ll have a severe weather discussion and book signing.

Then I’m on to Austin tonight for the last leg of my tour. I’ll be up bright and early Friday morning to be guest on KEYE-TV the CBS station in Austin with my good friend and former co-anchor Fred Cantu. Just like old times!!!!
Friday afternoon I’ll visit with students at Blackshear Elementary in east Austin and then head north for a book signing and reading at the Barnes & Noble in north Austin near Lakeline Mall. Address is 10000 Research Blvd.

On Saturday morning I’ll also be a guest on KXAN’s morning show. So look for that during the 8 o’clock hour.

If you can’t make the signing on Friday..I’ll be at the Barnes and Noble in the Arboretum area Saturday from 11am-1pm.

I hope you will check out my website www.katieandthemagicumbrella.com  to find out more about the book and brand new plush Katie doll. This book is a must have if you or know someone you know has a child frightened of thunderstorms.

Please pass on this information to your friends and family and I hope to see you soon!

This past Sunday I had a really great turnout for a book signing hosted by Willow Cottage in downtown Grapevine. The owner Kathy Diamond, really went all out to host this event, and I’m very thankful.

I was pleasantly surprised to walk into store to find a beautiful display of strawberries and Rice Krispy treats, among other yummy things, ready to be dipped into this amazing chocolate fountain. The family that owns Bermuda Gold just a few doors down on Main Street, is also hosting this sinful table of treats at many local events.

Across from the chocolate table another edible display of fresh-from-the-oven gourmet cupcakes! My true weakness. The fabulous baker? Her name is Tonya Wilkinson. She is a mother of two, and owner of Crumbles Cupcakes. You have to stop by and taste her wonderful creations.

So the kids and adults there to attend my reading and signing, all got to sample a smorgasbord of  cupcakes and chocolate dipped everything yummy. I apologize to all the parents now for the guaranteed sugar rush they had to deal with the rest of the afternoon!

A big thank you to everyone that took time out of their busy Sunday to come and share Katie’s story and thank you Grapevine for the mention in the Grapevine Sun and www.ilovegrapevinetexas.com .

My next signing is actually a full-fledged book tour.

Beginning Thursday April 1st – Saturday April 4th, I’ll be doing the media and bookstore circuit in San Antonio and Austin. For more info just check out my events calendar right on this sight for details, or just log onto www.katieandthemagicumbrella.com .

If you know someone who lives in the Austin or San Antonio area who you think would really love the book and sharing it with any young child would is petrified or fascinated by storms, please spread the word!

Sunshine!

I encourage you to join a special grassroots group of weather observation volunteers called CoCoRaHS (sounds just like cocoa cocoa razz).

It’s easy to sign up. Just log onto
www.cocorahs.org
You’ll find all the information you need about the program and requirements.
It is supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and NOAA.

By taking a few minutes to sign up for CoCoRaHS, your reports go into a nationwide database of rainfall and storm data. It’s a terrific way to contribute to a growing weather and climate observation network. This network needs more volunteers and it’s so easy to participate.

As spring storm season rapidly approaches, for those of you with small children and grandchildren who are fearful of storms, you might consider picking up my new book “Katie and the Magic Umbrella.”

I’ll be signing copies of the book and meeting and greeting at this wonderfully quaint little gift shop in downtown Grapevine called Willow Cottage, this Sunday, March 22nd.
I’ll be there from 1-3pm.

Kathy Diamond who owns the store has been such a wonderful supporter of my efforts. She is not only carrying my book, but also the doll.

I hope you’ll join me. I’d love to personalize a copy for you or that special child in your life.
See you there!

It’s been a very dry winter, and rain is desperately needed all across North Texas. We would need more than 8″ of rain to catch up on moisture lost since January of last year! La Nina is the main reason, keeping the storm track north.

But temporary changes in the storm track this week are finally going to bring us some rain and because the Gulf of Mexico is wide open…we’ll have the low level moisture back and ideal wind shear for strong to severe storms.

Storms developing in the Panhandle and West Texas tonight may bring some strong storms across the DFW area in the morning around daybreak, but  the main show is expected Tuesday/Tuesday night as a second strong disturbance crosses our region.  There is some discussion that this could pose as our first significant tornado threat of the year.

We’ll see how all the ingredients come together..so stay tuned to the latest forecasts on CBS 11. You’ll want to watch the weather closely between now and mid week. Could be an interesting ride!

Dallas Child Magazine - February '09 Issue

Gretchen Sparling interviewed me recently for an article called, “Kristine Kahanek: The Mom Next Door” that appears in this month’s Dallas Child Magazine and Ft. Worth Child Magazine.

The article talks about how I balance my work and family lives, as well as my new book, Katie and the Magic Umbrella

Here’s a little excerpt:

Kristine Kahanek’s familiar face and voice soothes the uneasy, weather-related worries of Dallas-Fort Worth residents on Channel 11 (KTVT-TV), where she serves as chief meteorologist. But this mom of two aims to reach more than just television viewers with her weather expertise – Kahanek recently authored her first children’s book, Katie and the Magic Umbrella: A Stormy Adventure

Just in time for Texas’ spring storm season, the working mom shares details of her happily harried life with kids, Savannah, 7, and Jared, 10, and her inspiration for helping kids keep their cool when the weather heats up.

You can read the entire article over on the Dallas Child web site.

A big thank you to Gretchen and her staff for inviting me to be a part of this month’s edition. My kids think it’s so cool that they are in a “real” magazine and got to be in a “real”photo shoot!

This week, I am attending a  weather conference in Steamboat Springs, Colorado called “The Weather Summit.” I have been attending this conference off and on for the last 10 years. It is an invitation-only conference of broadcasts meteorologists from across the U.S. and North America. I am very honored to be on the list.

Because there are only 20-25 of us, we have the opportunity to learn and interact one-on-one with some of the nations leading scientists and meteorological experts in their fields. At other professional weather conferences like the AMS or NWA, the groups are so large that each presenter only has 10-20 minutes to share the latest on their topic or research. It can often be intimidating to ask questions and really get the information you are looking for with 500-600 people in the room. Not here, each expert/presenter spends at least 11/2-2 hours sharing with us the details of their research and then we have lots of time to ask questions and share in some often “spirited” conversation.

The main theme this year is Climate Change. We are also recapping the 2008 hurricane and tornado seasons. On the schedule are experts like Dr. Neil Frank (former Director of the National Hurricane Center) and Dr. Howie Bluestein with the University of Oklahoma. He is one of the nations leading tornado researchers.

Of course, Steamboat loves to have us here too because we all do live shots for our viewers back home. And now with new technology  being introduced at the conference this year, we are able to stream video from our sessions LIVE.

Want to learn more? Just click here.

Thursday I will be live from Steamboat during our 4 p.m. newscast, sharing some interesting tidbits from the conference. So I hope you’ll tune in.

Just in case you were wondering….there’s a 40″ base on the mountain.

It’s been sunny and in the upper 20′s, so the snow is packed. The good news, lot’s of new snow in the forecast by the end of the week. Powder, Baby!

The center of Hurricane Gustav is currently located about 35 miles to the north-northwest of Lafayette Louisiana. Maximum sustained winds are at 75 mph.

Current radar shows the heaviest weather is to the north of the center of circulation. This area, which contains very heavy rains and wind gusts to near hurricane force, will pass through Alexandria and central Louisiana in the next several hours. It will then head in the vicinity of Shreveport by tomorrow morning.

There are several feeder bands rotating into the system on its east side, and storms within these bands have produced isolated tornadoes today.

IR Satellite continues to show a weakening system as cloud tops continue to warm as the system moves further inland. This weakening trend will continue with the hurricane being downgraded to a tropical storm later this evening or early Tuesday morning. It then could be a depression by late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
